History:
The Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) is an art museum located within the Moorilla winery on the Berriedale peninsula in Hobart. It is the largest privately funded museum in the Southern Hemisphere. MONA houses ancient, modern and contemporary art collections from the founder, David Walsh.
Itinerary:
After being picked up from your accommodation, we head north of the city for about 15 minutes to reach MONA at street level. MONA appears to be a single-story building that gives little indication of the complex underground labyrinth. Visitors must descend a spiral staircase to begin exploration, coming up a level at a time. There are no windows to distract from David Walsh’s wonderland. It is very easy to spend a few hours exploring this intriguing, controversial underground phenomena.
Next destination being Pooley Wines. Cooinda Vale Vineyard – meticulously cared for by three generations of the Pooley family that yielded their first vintage in 1989. John Pooley and his wife Libby bought Belmont, a heritage listed Georgian home on the outskirts of Richmond, where Pooley wines expanded their estate and established a second vineyard, Butcher’s Hill. First vintage produced there was in 2007. The Pooley family philosophy of making wines that reflect their unique environment while pushing the quality of the grapes and wines even further continues. Pooley Wines has been recognised as one of Australia’s most renowned cool-climate producers.
You will experience structured in-depth tastings which speak to their unique location and passion for their craft.
Then relax and be indulged during your superb, Frogmore Creek lunch experience. The restaurant is nestled amongst the premium vineyard. It has a rustic homestead style – with the stunning backdrop of the picturesque Coal River Valley.
