History:

Kempton was home to the Mouheneener/Big River Tribe of Aboriginal people, who retreated from their land when the European settlers arrived in the 1820’s. The first land granted went to Anthony Fenn Kemp, after whom the town was eventually named.

Itinerary:

You will be collected from your accommodation at 9:30am, you can sit back and enjoy the opportunity of taking in the countryside as we drive closer to your first destination of The Old Kempton Distillery, about a 45-minute drive from Hobart. The Old Kempton Distillery in an 1840’s manor. It’s known as Dysart House, in the colonial town of Kempton. It is situated 51.9kms outside of Hobart heading in a northerly direction. Most importantly, the distillery offers the opportunity to sit back, relax and enjoy this 1840 renovated homestead.

On to the next stop at the oldest bridge in Australia, the Richmond Bridge (Circa – 1823), then on to Richmond Village. This would be known as one of Tasmania’s most popular destinations…steeped in history. Nestled in the heart of the Coal River Valley, Richmond was established as an important military staging post and convict station that linked Hobart with Port Arthur. The elegant Georgian architecture, with beautiful heritage buildings (dating back as early as the 1820’s), nowadays, housing galleries, tea shops, craft boutiques and museums. Enjoy and experience 30 minutes of exploration in the village!

Next stop on your journey is at Wicked Cheese Co, for cheese tastings at this family owned boutique ‘cheese makers heaven’ in the Coal River Valley. Wicked Cheese has emerged in past years – to gain recognition as one of the most impressive, high quality, hand-made cheese ranges in Australia.

The next wine tastings to be truly enjoyed are at Frogmore Creek Winery. The highly acclaimed wines are from this local, cool climate of the Coal River Valley, including the Forty Two Degrees South range! Frogmore’s Full Range includes: Cabernet – Cabernet Franc – Cabernet Sauvignon – Chardonnay – Cuvee – Gewürztraminer – Merlot – Petit Verdot – Pinot Grigio – Pinot Noir – Riesling – Rosé – Sauvignon Blanc – Shiraz and Sparkling.

Follow on from tastings to relax and be indulged during your superb, Frogmore Creek lunch experience. The restaurant is nestled amongst the premium vineyard. It has a rustic homestead style – with the stunning backdrop of the picturesque Coal River Valley. Frogmore Creek delivers exceptional quality across food, wine and service, creating the essential framework for a memorable dining experience.

Next stop, Sullivans Cove Distillery…their whiskies are made from 100% Tasmanian malted barley. In 2014 they became the winners of ‘the best single malt whisky in the world’. They pride themselves on using human senses to nurture each cask. They have been instrumental in putting Tasmanian and Australian whisky on the global map and also in cultivating a new generation of whiskey lovers!

The spirits are diluted to 63.5%ABV before entering it into the casks for ageing. Most of their whiskies are aged in 200L American oak ex-bourbon barrels or 300L French oak ex-tawny barrels. The whisky is allowed to mature for between nine and eighteen years in the unique Tasmanian climate.

Distillery tastings are guided by the knowledgeable cellar door team. Three tastings are offered – whiskey and brandy flights and a premium whiskey flight (some of the rarest releases).

Sullivan Cove tastings are $40.00 per person (minimum)

Relax, after a day of unique Hobart history and topped off with decadent wine, whiskey and food indulgences, as you drive back to your accommodation at approximately 5:00/5:30pm
