History:

Bruny Island is a small and unique island off the southern coast of Tasmania – accessible by vehicle transportation ferry (approximately a 20 minute crossing from the mainland of Tasmania).

Bruny Island was prominent in the early exploration of the southern seas and partially charted by Able Tasman in 1642.

It was inhabited by the Nuenonne band of the South East tribe of Aborigines. Mangana, father of Truganini, was the chief when Furneaux visited in 1773 and Cook in 1777.

The island has been used for timber, apple orchards, sheep and cattle grazing since the 1830s.

The island features a naturally pristine environment to explore, with large populations of native birdlife. Also, a population of over 200 white wallaby and penguins. The coastal areas are home to fur seals, dolphins and whales.

Itinerary:

After being collected from your accommodation, relax and enjoy a 40-minute scenic drive from Hobart to Kettering before arriving at the ferry to Bruny Island.

As the ferry makes its way across the beautiful water of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel to the island you can take in the experience out on deck – you may be lucky enough to sight the occasional dolphin or seal!

Absorb the spectacular views across the ocean and of picturesque sea cliffs and beautifully preserved nature as you are driven to the southern point of the island to South Bruny National Park. The islands coastline is surrounded by world class beaches, with pristine white sand.

The lookout at the ‘The Neck’ is where you’ll see stunning 360-degree views of the island and beyond. This is an isthmus that connects the north and south ends of the island. Fairy penguin dens are in the surrounding sand dunes – they journey there at dusk to nest for the night.

Bruny prides itself on local, artisan produce providers. Taste mouth-watering plump oysters plucked straight from the water at Get Shucked Oysters. There’s a take home option if you’d like to enjoy more later! Experience the finest cheeses the island offers Bruny Island Cheese, on a superb cheese platter during your journey. Indulge in your choice of the best and freshest produce of either, a delicious seafood or winery lunch experience. This is perfectly topped off with more of the islands exquisite produce from talented producers with chocolate and honey tastings.
