History:

The Aboriginal community, Moomairremener people, were the original inhabitants of the Richmond region. The areas exploration was initiated by surveyor, James Meehan during the early 1800’s. He named the region ‘Coal River’ – after finding large amounts of coal existed around the area. Land grants were rolled out from 1808 and the area was quickly established as a rich agricultural region and one of Tasmania’s leading wheat producing regions.

Itinerary:

After being collected from your accommodation, relax and enjoy a 30-minute scenic drive from Hobart to your first stop destination – the summit of Mount Wellington, also known as ‘Kunanyi’, the Aboriginal name given to the mountain by the traditional owners of the land.

Your journey up the mountain passes by temperate rainforests, sub-alpine flora and glacial rock formations. The Mount Wellington summit provides iconic, panoramic views from 1271metres above sea level. When you stand on the lookout, at the summit, you’ll experience one of the most unique perspectives of Hobart – enjoyed from a bird’s eye view!

Sit back and enjoy the scenic drive back down the mountain, having the opportunity to re-take in the beautiful views, flora and fauna on route to Hobart’s unique waterfront ‘wharf’ area. These areas are Victoria Dock (a working fishing harbour) and Constitution Dock (hosting fish punts and even the odd seal sighting)! Take in the picturesque row of three- and four-storey sandstone warehouses along Salamanca Place – a classic example of Australian colonial architecture, dating back to the whaling days of the 1830’s.

After leaving the water front we travel across the Tasman Bridge (which holds it’s own history of being re-built after it’s collapse during the early 1970’s), to the eastern shore of Hobart and continue on to experience the rich farming land as we head towards Richmond.

Our first vineyard stop is at Puddle Duck Winery – a boutique family owned and operated vineyard that was established in 1997, and produces premium Tasmanian wines from grapes grown at our single site vineyard, and then processed within an hour of picking in our energy neutral winery. Some of it’s awards include:

  • Best Cellar Door Southern Tasmania Gourmet Traveller 2013
  • Certificate of Excellence Trip Advisor 2014, 2015, 2016
  • Silver at the Tasmanian Tourism Awards for Best Tourism Winery 2015
  • Trophy for the Best Vintage Wine (Bubbleduck) at the Tasmanian Wine Show 2016

Next stop on your journey is at Wicked Cheese Co, for cheese tastings at this family owned boutique ‘cheese makers heaven’ in the Coal River Valley. Wicked Cheese has emerged in past years – to gain recognition as one of the most impressive, high quality, hand-made cheese ranges in Australia.

On to the next stop at the oldest bridge in Australia, the Richmond Bridge (Circa – 1823), then on to Richmond Village. This would be known as one of Tasmania’s most popular destinations…steeped in history. Nestled in the heart of the Coal River Valley, Richmond was established as an important military staging post and convict station that linked Hobart with Port Arthur. The elegant Georgian architecture, with beautiful heritage buildings (dating back as early as the 1820’s), nowadays, housing galleries, tea shops, craft boutiques and museums. Enjoy and experience 30 minutes of exploration in the village!

Your next destination is Nocton Vineyard – a dainty little cellar door that has a big view. Their staff take the time to guide you through exquisite wines, with guided tastings. Nothing is off limits and they include both their Estate and Reserve labels.

The next wine tastings to be truly enjoyed are at Frogmore Creek Winery. The highly acclaimed wines are from this local, cool climate of the Coal River Valley, including the Forty Two Degrees South range! Frogmore’s Full Range includes: Cabernet – Cabernet Franc – Cabernet Sauvignon – Chardonnay – Cuvee – Gewürztraminer – Merlot – Petit Verdot – Pinot Grigio – Pinot Noir – Riesling – Rosé – Sauvignon Blanc – Shiraz and Sparkling.

Follow on from tastings to relax and be indulged during your superb, Frogmore Creek lunch experience. The restaurant is nestled amongst the premium vineyard. It has a rustic homestead style – with the stunning backdrop of the picturesque Coal River Valley. Frogmore Creek delivers exceptional quality across food, wine and service, creating the essential framework for a memorable dining experience.

Relax, after a of day beginning with spectacular scenery, through to unique Hobart history and topped off with decadent wine and food indulgences, as you drive back to your accommodation at approximately 4:00-4:30pm.
